Is The President Our Leader?

Or do we simply lead ourselves?

The word ‘president’ derives from the Latin praesidere, which literally means "to sit before".

As the Chief Officer who presides over the executive branch, the president swears an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.

That is the president’s sole job and responsibility.

Not to lead America—and certainly not to lead the “free world” (like an emperor, perhaps?)—but to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Americans don’t have leaders, we have public servants.

America’s founders intended that “We The People” lead ourselves and, by extension, keep our public servants in check.

Why are there leaders? Because there are followers. Without followers, there’s no one available to lead.

And why do followers exist? Because they yearn for a leader.

But leaders can be narcissistic (Trump), mentally disturbed (Nixon), outright crooks (Clinton), even despots.

The first stanza of Maryland’s state song reads: “The despot’s heel is on thy shore.”

And who was the despot? Abraham Lincoln

Need a leader? You follow leaders at your own risk.

The two-part solution?

1. Read the Constitution.
2. Then lead yourself.
